Top 5 Inexpensive Activities on Maui

If you’re looking for adventure and an array of activities, Maui is the place to visit. Today, I’m sharing five fun and inexpensive activities to enjoy while on the island. These budget friendly activities are perfect for families and individuals looking to visit Hawaii without overspending.

Haleakala National Park

This park is 34,000-acres of beauty, featuring hiking trails and lush rainforest.  The summit of Haleakalā is at 10,023 feet and cascades down to the Kīpahulu District. If you’re looking for an incredible view of the island or a perfect sunrise, I recommend making the drive to the top early in the morning. Haleakalā summit is one of the best places in the world for star gazing too. Driving time from Kahului is approximately 3 hours, and it costs $25 per vehicle.

Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary

I encourage you to visit this quaint sanctuary while in Kihei. The staff are very knowledgeable, and we learned quite a bit about whales. Did you know that whales do not eat while mating in Hawaii? You’ll learn plenty more facts like that one. They’ve also got a great area to relax and watch for whales.

Iao Valley State Park

Enjoy a hike on the ʻIao Needle Lookout Trail and Ethnobotanical Loop, where you can learn about the plants of Hawaii. The ridge-top lookout provides spectacular views of the valley. The park is about 10 miles long, if I recall correctly. Be sure to pack a light jacket. This section of the island gets a lot of rain, as you can see in my photo. If you’re a cat lover, be sure to grab some cute pictures of the resident kitties by parking. This park is frequently under construction, so check online before making the drive.

 

Road to Hana

Stroll Historic Lahaina

Stop by Lahaina for shopping, great food, and a beautiful sunset. If you get too warm or need to relax for a moment, cool off under the Banyan trees. Ryan and I really enjoy this coastal town. We actually spend quite a bit of time just walking through the shops. I also love to grab a bite to eat at Koa’s Seaside Grill and watch for whales. Don’t forget a Hawaiian Shave Ice.

I’ve been told that Front Street goes all out for Halloween. So if that’s your thing, I hear it’s the place to be. The town also hosts a variety of art and cultural events, including the Maui Whale Festival.
